Snorkel Training at Wraysbury

Preparing to dive at Wraysbury May '09

The Site

Wraysbury Dive Centre is based in a disused reservoir which is used exclusively for diving. It is sheltered open water which is a good introduction to open water snorkel diving.

This small lake has a number of dive platforms at both 6m and 10m. It also sports a number of sunken cars and boats. If you are really lucky you may also see some fish!

 Address

Station Road, Wraysbury, Middx ,TW19 5ND

Wraysbury Diving Centre

Wraysbury has good facilities including car parking, a snack bar with tea/coffee/soup, chips and burgers, benches to sit at, dive shop with a range of equipment and newly built changing, shower with toilet facilities.

Wet suits can be hired at the Dive Centre.

The charge (2009) is  £8 per  diver.

It opens at 9am.

Snorkel Diving

Although much of the lake is deep, there are many areas where the water is 3-6metres deep and well within Snorkel diving range. For example there is a camper van at 5metres. There are slipways and pontoon entries points so there is a variety of entries possible. There are reputed to be carp and pike in the lake.  We often go to the edges of the lake, where there are more chances of seeing fish and we are less likely to find SCUBA divers.

Safety

It is important to sign in at the Dive shop so they have a record of who is on site.

There are many other divers around so we have to be careful both in out of the water. This is especially important at the entrances and exits to the water, which can get crowded. As Snorkel Divers have less equipment and find it easier to move than Scuba divers we should give way to them!

Although this is sheltered it is still open water, so safety must be paramount. Buddy pairs will keep together and the Dive leader will set areas of where to go and not go in the water. We also need to be aware of the movement of other divers.

As this is an inland lake it has fresh water and therefore we need less weight than in the sea.

Directions from Dorking

Take A24 north and join the M25 towards Heathrow. From Junction 13 of the M25 (A30 Staines and Wraysbury) follow signs to the B376 (Wraysbury).

Once in the village carry on through, pass the Perseverance public house on your left, 500 metres further on will be Douglas Lane also on your left, and after a further 50 metres you will find the Dive centre entrance on the left hand side.

It’s easy to miss. If you find the Station you will have gone just a bit too far.
